A strong set of values, a clear mission, and an inspiring vision are the hallmarks of successful and sustainable organizations. Many times, these principles remain unspoken. To speak about them – to name them – enables a greater sense of shared community and relationships among what might otherwise be a disparate group of individuals. Naming our principles gives shape to our “Why?” Our mission in recent years was simply written as, “To improve our communities’ quality of life by enhancing our members’ financial well-being.” It has served our employees, members, and communities well, and – if our member testimonies are correct – we have successfully embodied that historic mission over the course of the past 69 years.
In 2019, however, we embarked on a journey of re-discovery in order to refresh our mission and to expand upon it. Our goal was to reach higher – to challenge ourselves to become more effective at doing what we have always done: make the world a better place through the credit union ethic of “People helping people.” With our new values, mission, and vision statements, we believe we set the stage for our Sooper Credit Union family to build upon our successful past and to become something truly extraordinary. Following our extensive efforts to listen to our members, employees, and the Board of Directors, our new values, mission, and vision statements can be unveiled.
We share these with you, our Sooper Credit Union global community, as an introduction to a conversation. Will you help us attempt something so inspiring, so challenging, that simply in the effort to reach that vision, we will all be transformed? The fact is: We are in this together. And, we need you to help us. We are asking for your talents, your gifts, and your own interpretations of what our new guiding principles mean to you. Will you join us?
In October, we shared with you seven core statements that embody our shared identity and give voice to our commitment to serving you, our members. These values, our core or foundational touchstones, support and empower our mission. Our mission statement is designed to show us how we will make a difference and achieve our highest aspiration through our daily actions. And finally, that aspiration is our vision for a better future many years to come. There is no question it is bold. But, if not for the bold, where would our world be today? Please join us in this new adventure. Follow us in the months and years ahead for more on just how extraordinary we may all become – together.
