Sooper Credit Union donates to Porter-Billups Leadership Academy

Sooper Credit Union shows a strong commitment to Regis University, Porter-Billups Leadership Academy with a generous donation

ARVADA, Colo. – July 23, 2021 – Sooper Credit Union (SCU) regularly gives back to the communities their members call home, especially when there is a direct impact on youth. The credit union is pleased to announce a $25,000 donation to the Porter-Billups Leadership Academy (PBLA) at Regis University, a program they have supported since 2012.

Founded in 1996, PBLA helps at-risk Denver youth graduate from high school and college. Through this experience, students develop leadership principles that enable them to become effective leaders in their schools and communities.

The result of the year-round work with PBLA high school students speaks for itself. The academy has grown significantly from 20 students in 1996 to 215 students in 2020. And the academy’s high school graduation rate of 99.5% is another testament to the program’s success.

“The Porter-Billups Leadership Academy is a one-of-a-kind program. Lonnie Porter and Chauncey Billups have dedicated so much to this academy, and it’s amazing to see the impact they have on the kids,” said Carrie Langgard, Executive Vice President of Sooper Credit Union and PBLA Associate Board Member. “We have a personal investment in our communities, and we couldn’t think of a better way to reach out to our youth than by supporting a program that prepares them for success.”

SCU has a long history dedicated to giving back. Each year, the credit union partners with Arrupe Jesuit High School, a college prep school that serves economically disadvantaged students from Denver’s at-risk neighborhoods, as part of their Corporate Work-Study Program. Plus, the SCU Community Foundation has given nearly $200,000 in scholarships, donations, and sponsorships to hundreds of organizations since its inception in 2009.
